Sunday 4th March saw yet another race in the early season of the 2012 Cycling Ireland season.  Lakeside Wheelers were well represented in all four races staged by Navan Road Club on what was fantastic day for racing, albeit a tad windy at times, with 10 taking part in the A4 race, 1 in the A3 & 3 in the A2/A1 race. Alas this week there was no silverware to be picked up by any of the strong squad, although Colm Lynch & Gareth Butler finished 9th & 10 respectfully in what was though A4 race with two laps of a testing energy sapping course.

Short Report on the A4 Race
With a total number of ten wheelers taking to the starting line on Sunday last & after last week’s performances in Dundalk hopes were high for some good results. With over 80 riders in the peloton the pace was high from the off with a slight tailwind & a fast downhill section all riders were jostling for position at the front of the race for the first corner which brought us to the toughest part of the lap with a long drag and a headwind helping put the pressure on the front of the bunch.

When we eventually made it to the top we got a bit of respite with a long sweeping downhill section which took us to the Navan Road where the pressure really come on with a strong crosswind the bunch got strung out by some very strong riders who were determined to split the race up. The split eventually came on the second lap when a crash managed to hold up roughly half of the bunch. The Wheelers were well represented in the front group with three riders managing to avoid the crash.

Unfortunately for me the second time up the long drag put paid to my attempts for the day! Well done to Colm & Gareth up managed to stay with the front group and picked up 9th & 10th and also to Richie Farrell from our neighbouring club 905 from Edenderry in taking 2nd.

Upcoming Races
Next weekend will see our nearest neighbours Clonard CC stage their opening race of the season. This is always a good safe fast race on roads that we all know very well, Clonard – Kilbeggan – Clonard.
