Well done to Damien Shaw and the whole of the Lakeside Wheelers team who did us proud again winning the overall team prize, 1st rider Damien Shaw and 7th rider Stuart Cox.

I spoke to the team over the weekend and it seems that confidence was high after stage 1 in which Damien and Stuart got into a break finishing 1st and 3rd respectively. We all know that Damien loves a good time trial and he didn’t let us down winning Sunday mornings 7.8km by 4 seconds.

It’s becoming normal practice for the wheelers to be defending the yellow jersey and high General Classification results and Damien was lucky to have a strong and experienced team around him. Peter Rimmer finished 3 minutes down after day one and with his race over it was his turn to work for fellow team mates Damien and Stuart. There was a little panic in Sunday afternoon’s stage when a break got away with over a minute gap. Peter helped by Duathlon champion Dave Fagen and last week’s mountain climber jersey winner John Murray moved to the front of the bunch and using Stuarts words “put in a massive effort”  bringing the break back to 20 seconds.

There seems to be no stopping the wheelers race team lately and things are looking good for this weekend’s tough hilly Hammond memorial and the following weeks Shay Elliott memorial where the big boys are coming over from the Uk and our A1 and A2 riders will face a big challenge, no problem!
