Damien Shaw in Mallorca

posted 6 Feb 2011, 11:09 by Kevin Monaghan
Weekly readers will remember that I wrote, somewhat cryptically, two weeks ago that we had very exciting news in relation to one of our members. Well, this week we can reveal that Damien Shaw was spotted by Cycling Ireland at some recent testing sessions and has been whisked off to Mallorca on a training camp for more testing and training.

With Damien’s consent, I spoke this week to Dr. Philip Leigh who is the High Performance Director at Cycling Ireland. He told me that Damien turned up at a testing session to try out for the pilots’ job on the track tandem with the hope of getting a slot to pilot for the paralympic team who are training for the World Paralympic Track Championship being held in Italy in March. Basically, they were very impressed with the numbers Damien produced and immediately invited him for more testing. In Dr. Leigh’s own words, Damien is “...a class act with massive potential and we (Cycling Ireland) have very high hopes for him”.

Dr Leigh stated that the plan was to do the training in Mallorca and all going well that Damien would be riding as a pilot at the above mentioned World Championships in Italy. After that, the sky is the limit for Damien so we wish him all the very best in his quest to achieve his goals and are very proud to have him in Lakeside Wheelers.

Special mention must go to Craig Sterret for all the help and encouragement which he has given to Damien over the last few months and also to Outdoor Escape for the use of their facilities where Damien has been training in the off-season.
