With the road racing season now officially finished and the treasured carbon bikes and wheels all cleaned and lying in storage for next March it is now time to turn our thoughts to rest and recovery? Not likely!

In recent weeks a small group of members have been busy preparing for the upcoming Cyclocross season which began in earnest with the “Fixx Coffee Supercross” league last weekend. This year Lakeside Wheelers will join with some neighbouring clubs including Oldcastle, Longford and Navan to form a midlands based league which will commence in the coming weeks. This is a very exciting development for local Cyclocross fans and will see at least two events staged in Mullingar.

Cyclocross is basically off-road cycling which is usually staged on a short circuit laid out with stakes and tape in a parkland setting. Obstacles usually include low jumps, mud baths, hills and stretches of gravel or pathway which must be negotiated on each lap. Last year’s events in St Lomans GAA grounds were more or less staged as pop-ups to assess appetite or desire for this type of racing and proved to be a major success. The members organising this year’s races are putting the finishing touches to the programme and are hopeful that the local events will be held in a new venue.

The first Lakeside Wheelers Cyclocross event will be held on Sunday, October 9th with races for all levels and ages from U/6’s/8’s upwards. The very enjoyable “Have-a Go” race for beginners will be repeated again on this year’s programme. Keep an eye on club emails and Facebook pages for further details.

Action from last year's Cyclocross League.
