LAkeside Wheelers LogoAs you know, Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar was selected to host the 2014 National Cycling Championships. These championships comprised both the Time Trial and Road Race events. The Time Trials and the Road Race for the Elite Senior Men in June were a tremendous success. The participation of a huge number of members of the club contributed to making Ireland's most prestigious cycling event with professional cyclists such as Daniel Martin, Matt Brammeier and Martyn Irvine, and ourwn Damien Shaw such a success. On behalf of the committee I sincerely wish to thank every one who helped out.

Unfortunately due to tragic events outside the clubs control the Ladies and Veteran’s races were postponed. They are now scheduled for Saturday 20th September on the same course and again to start and finish in Multyfarnham. The Ladies and Veteran riders will compete over a hilly and challenging circuit of 19 km for a total distance of 114km.

Over 200 racers are expected to visit Mullingar and Multyfarnham together with their families, friends and support teams over the weekend. Lakeside Wheelers again plan to greet these visitors with a well organised race programme. We are determined to continue our fine tradition of hosting top class cycling events which will put Westmeath, our club and its partners firmly on the sporting map. There are a number of Lakeside Wheelers members taking part in these races so we want to make sure the races are organised safely and enjoyably.

The Club and the Race Committee of Shay O’Toole, Joe Duffy, Carmel Buckley, Jack Nugent, Donie Kelleher and Roibeard O Ceallaigh will be will be seeking your assistance in the staging of these Championships. You will appreciate that a large number of volunteers will be required to ensure that a race of this magnitude runs smoothly. Your tremendous support in the past is greatly appreciated and we look forward to staging another top class event to promote cycling in Mullingar and the county.

A large number of Marshals, approximately 60 to 70 are required in addition to drivers, registration, etc. so you can see we need your help. I would be obliged if you could contact Roibeard O'Ceallaigh or myself or indicate it on the National Championships Face Book page, to indicate your availability to assist from approx. 10.00am to 5.00pm. Hot food will be provided for everyone providing assistance.  If you cannot be available for the full time period, the club would still appreciate your assistance at a variety of jobs which are crucial to running this event.

Thank You,

Michael Reynolds
