Beginners Introductory Cycling Programme

Last Saturday (10th March) morning saw the start of the five week long beginner’s introduction cycling program. The program is aimed at adults who are new to cycling with a view to encouraging and helping them in cycling skills and to experience  cycling in a group and who also were maybe thinking of joining Lakeside Wheelers but unsure of their abilities or how to go about it.

The slight mist that was falling on Saturday morning did not deter a group of 20 participants turning up for the first session. After a welcome talk from our chairman, Dermot, the group were given a talk by the leaders for the day on cycling safety tips and skills. A short demo on cycling in pairs and how the rotation within a group works was also given. Due to the large turnout, the group was divided in two as per our safety protocols and they headed out the gates of ORS shortly after 9am.

Both groups returned back safe and sound some time later with 25km done for their first time out in a group. Everyone enjoyed the spin and are all looking forward to the next session which is on Saturday March 24th (we're taking a break for St. Patricks Day). As part of the aim of the five week program is to gradually increase the miles each week, the next spin will be 30 km in length and everyone was happy with that. We hope that the session on Saturday will encourage everyone and they will be out and about themselves between now and the 24th of March.

Well done to all the participants and indeed a couple of them appeared on Sunday morning for our regular spin and went with the C group and by all accounts, did very well indeed. A big thank you also to the volunteers from Lakeside Wheelers who led the groups and looked after everyone and made sure everything ran smoothly. Without the volunteers, programs such as this could not be ran.

If anyone else is interested in joining the adult introduction programme, please come along on Saturday March 24th at 9am to the ORS. It's never too late to join in and it is certainly an enjoyable experience and a great way of getting to know people and see the countryside. All you need is a road worthy bike and a helmet.

Looking forward to seeing you all again on the 24th. If you are interested in taking part please contact me (Mark Monaghan) on (086)2235917 or by email on
