Last Saturday morning, March 24th saw the second session of the five week long beginner’s introduction cycling program. The program is aimed at adults who are new to cycling with a view to encouraging and helping them in cycling skills and to experience cycling in a group and who also were maybe thinking of joining Lakeside Wheelers but unsure of their abilities or how to go about it.

A beautifully sunny morning greeted the fantastic total of 23 participants who signed on for this session. As per the program schedule, the group were given a talk on cycling safety tips and skills and also tips on what to wear and not to wear while cycling. This time we divided into 3 groups and proceeded out the gates of ORS leaving a minute or two gap between each group. We heading out the Delvin road and turning right at the Cloughan Inn, headed along the road to Killucan, taking in some rolling hills and beautiful countryside with the sun on our backs.

All 3 groups stopped in Killucan and had drink/food etc. and also gave people a chance to chat and mix, which is part and parcel of leisure cycling. Indeed I met a few "cycling widows” namely, Fiona, Niamh, Olive and Pauline so watch out lads, the girls are taking over and by all accounts really enjoying it! The 3 groups again set off a couple of minutes apart and we turned in the direction of The Downs where we turned right in the village and then left and headed back to town by Curraghmore so as to avoid the road works on the N4 and back into ORS with 30K under our belts this time.

As the aim of the program is also to build up the miles each week, nobody seemed to mind when it was announced that next week’s spin would be slightly longer.

Once again well done to all the participants and we certainly hope that everyone is enjoying the sessions be it for the exercise or indeed the social aspect of cycling in a group. A big thank you also to the volunteers from Lakeside Wheelers who led the groups and looked after everyone and made sure everything ran smoothly. Without the volunteers, programs such as this could not be run.

If anyone else is interested in joining the adult introduction program, please come along on Saturday March 31st at 9am to the ORS or call (086)2235917. It's never too late to join in and it is certainly an enjoyable experience and a great way of getting to know people and see the countryside. All you need is a road worthy bike and a helmet! Looking forward to seeing you all again on the 31st.
