Mullingar 2-Day 2011

Another very busy weekend for Lakeside Wheelers came to a successful conclusion on Sunday evening as the curtain came down on the 2011 Mullingar 2 Day.  With four separate races, each with three stages, organisers, marshals and support crews and of course the riders themselves had a lot to contend with but thanks to the kindness of the weather gods and the efficiency or the organisaton and management of the event, everything went well and with the exception of two incidents on Saturday, everyone got home safe and sound.

There were great performances from Lakeside Wheelers riders in all four races.  Damien Shaw turned in another fine show, taking second place in stage 1, winning the time trial and taking over the leaders jersey and finishing third overall just 41 seconds behind the overall winner.   A fine performance also by Robbie Kenny who finished 13th in the final stage and 11th overall.

The overall winner of the A1 race was Ryan Sherlock of Sportactive who timed his break away on day 2 perfectly and took the time out of race leader Damien Shaw needed to take the win. Damien had worked extremely hard on day 1 riding from the bunch into the break that included Lakeside Wheelers Robbie Kenny. This was a fantastic effort that showed Damien’s impressive cycling ability with not one rider able to bridge the gap with him.

Damien then added to his lead with the fastest Time trial on Sunday morning ensuring he was in the race-leader's  green jersey for stage 3. Unfortunately despite Damien’s best efforts along with fellow team mates John Murray, Stuart Cox, Peter Rimmer and Robbie Kenny it wasn’t to be and the break couldn’t be brought back in.  Well done to the entire A1-A2 team for your efforts overr the two days.

Paul Crowley and David Fagan both gave good accounts of themselves in the A3 race.  Paul finished a very creditable 5th overall, 43 seconds behind race winner Martin Gill of Wexford Wheelers.  Dave finished twenty first overall. Well done to you both.

There were no fewer than nine Lakeside Wheelers in the A4 race.  This event was full subscribed with a strong field of eighty riders taking part.  The Mullinagr boys performed well and while they didn't figure in the overall general classification, Ken Berry took 6th place in stage 1, finishing highest place Lakeside Wheelers rider on GC in 24th place.  Other A4 riders on the Lakeside Wheelers in order of GC finish time included Charlie Sheridan, Brian Collentine, Damien O'Brien, Richie Lenihan, Conor Eighan, Mark Monaghan, Paddy Whelehan and David Bright.

Well done to Paula Murray who finished 4th overall in the Women's race, behind overall winner Fiona Cooke of Marble City Cycles, taking a fine 5th place in both road stages and 11th in the time trial.  Sarah Piner was next Wheeler in 14th place overall followed by Muirna Walsh.

A big thank you to all riders who took part.  We hope you enjoyed your weekend.  Thanks also to race Director Joe Duffy, chairman Shay O'Toole, the army of support crew who drove vehicles, provided backup support to riders, assisted with administration, marshalled the routes over the 2 days and looked after the start/finish.  Thanks also to Alice and her team for their expert time-keeping, the commissaires who kept everything under control on the road, the Gardai and Civil defence for their excellent traffic management.  We musn't forget Noel Kenneddy from Oscars who kept everyone going with fine fare from Oscar's restaurant, which went down a treat with everyone, not least when distributed meals-on-wheels style to marshals and race organisers on the roads over the two days.  Eddie Tyrrell of Grange Motors did a fantastic job providing support vehicles and organising the driving support crew - thanks Eddie.  The event would not have been possible without all this fantastic support.
